Inshore- The bait is here, live baits from fry bait to green backs have moved into the area by force. This has got all the local predators excited but lately the snook and mackerel seem to be most actively feeding inside Johns Pass. Just this morning, while loading the half day fishing trip Smokey dropped a live pigfish into a big school of spooked bait and no sooner did it hit the water, a big slot snook came up from the depths to explode on his live bait he was hand lining. The mackerel are thick inside the pass and along the jetties during the day. A gentleman from California named Joe Simmonds stopped by the shop to rent a rod and grab some lures, we showed him the Nekid ball jigs and off he went. In less than an hour he came back with half a dozen mackerel in two between him and his wife and he came back for more lures. The trout bite continues to be active at night around the lights and the beaches are holding pompano. It’s a great time to get a line in the water and the kingfish won’t be too far behind the invading mackerel on the beaches.
Near shore- The half day trip had the best catch of the decade this past week, we caught a monster sailfish! They caught this beautiful fish on a free lined dead threadfin after spotting a pair of sailfish tailing behind the boat. We are also doing very well on the grey snapper while drifting. Plus, the hogfish bite seems to be heating up as we caught three today at Hubbard’s Marina. You know they are biting well when Bob Skrivanek caught one aboard the half day party boat trip, he’s been fishing for them for over a year now!
Offshore- The grouper bite is hot offshore, the flying HUB 2 has been filling up the boxes on red grouper, gag grouper and scamp too. The most commonly caught grouper are the fat red grouper due to the hoter water temps right now. However, this past week on a 12 hour trip they not only limited out on red grouper, they caught nearly ten gag grouper and over a dozen big scamp. The mangrove bite is a little weak still but still steady. Also, we caught and released a beautiful sailfish in the offshore waters too so not only are we getting sailfish near shore but also offshore too! We actually caught two of them in two days this past week at Hubbard’s Marina. Captain Jack’s dolphin corner
Sea turtles are being spotted right now on the ride to and from Egmont key aboard the Tampa bay ferry and taxi route from Fort De Soto out to Egmont Key state park! This is a great added value to the relaxing cruise to this pristine island paradise and nature preserve.
We are still seeing our local baby bald eagle inside upper Boca Ceiga bay, he’s getting bigger now but still spotted often cruising the back bay watching for mullet to prey on.
The dolphins are loving the mullet run right now as they group up into larger than normal herds to help each other school up the fish into tight groups before charging into the ball of mullet to load up on the fat local mullet.
