Hubbard’s Marina Fishing Report 8/19/16

Inshore- The night bite is definitely best right now for the snook inside Johns Pass. Angelo Rivera, our friend from Seminole, is tearing up the big snook on his new Glad Snooker Jigs catching a handful of way over slot fish a night on the strong full moon tides. The red fish bite is great inside the intercostal right now especially around the mouths of our local estuaries and inside upper Tampa bay right now, Adam Melton, from Clearwater is tearing up the big bull red fish using hard jerk baits and also soft plastics. The sharks inside Johns Pass are biting well too with many local jetty anglers catching juvenile bonnet heads, blacktips and spinner sharks alike. The beaches are holding large schools of white bait that are luring in mackerel, jack crevalle, and even some big snook. While testing out our new beach bikes along Treasure Island the other morning we were able to spot a few large gatherings of monster breeder sized snook pouring out of the passes to cruise the beaches.

Near shore- The mackerel are starting to reappear in greater numbers, allowing some hope for a strong fall kingfish run to follow soon! The tarpon are starting to migrate out of the area allowing them to be spotted along the beaches and nearshore wrecks more often. This is a great time of year to sight fish permit along the near shore wrecks as well using live crabs for bait much like the way you would target tarpon in the passes and along the beaches. Shark fishing is easy and fun this time of year along any structure especially the wrecks. The red grouper bite is doing much better in the offshore waters but they are starting to bite better along the nearshore deeper waters as the water is cooling a bit finally after being abnormally hot for an extended period. The snapper bite has been great this past week thankfully!

Offshore- The latest offshore fishing trip at Hubbard’s Marina was our 63 hour deep drop pelagic trip. We did well on this long range extended trip, but the current was definitely on our enemy as the moon was coming to full. We combated the stronger current by positioning our anglers on the boat and allowing Captain Mark a chance to keep the bow of the boat intro the current while motoring forward on the bite. We caught some nice snowy grouper, big yellowedge, nice snapper, and some big tuna, wahoo and kingfish too! The big story was the plentiful tilefish we did very well on during this long range extended trip. Plus, while fishing the shallower 300-400 foot areas we got some monster gag grouper including a nearly 30lb rusty bellied gag grouper! We have some bad news to announce, unfortunately NOAA’s national marine fisheries has announced with very little notice that amberjack will NOT be reopening August first as they had promised and planned for. This means Jacks will not be open for harvest until January 2017. This is very sad news, but luckily grouper and snapper are still open and there’s plenty of fish to be caught out there still despite Jacks being closed down. Keep in mind that we have no control over these closures we just have to adjust to them as we are told. Due to the closure we have canceled the August 2nd 39 hour and changed the 12 hours on August 2nd and August 4th to 10 hours for grouper and snapper. Please, get involved and stand up for your rights to fish by joining the Fishing rights alliance (FRA) or the Coastal conservation association of Florida (CCA).

There’s not too many 39 hour trips left this year before the big boat goes into dry dock for some major upgrades and a full makeover! We have one more August 26th plus one earlier September. Then the Florida goes to dry dock before offering a few more 39 hours at the end of the year in November and December. To see a full list of our specialty trips, including the BRAND NEW trips we just added check out the specialty schedule at this link: https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/specialty-fishing-trip-schedule/
