Fishing report
Inshore- The inshore fishing this week has been hit and miss, the recent rain has the intercostal pretty brown with fresh water mixing with the saltwater especially with the outbound tides. Due to this sudden low salinity level it makes the fish get a little shocked, but they were feeding well on the incoming saltier tides. Also, during the brown water tides on the outgoing the sheepshead seemed a bit more active and many nice sheeps were caught. The weather also got the water temperatures a little lower as the fresh rainwater was cooler than the hot saltwater along the beaches.
Near shore- The near shore snapper bite has been going very well, were catching nice boat loads of grey snapper, porgies and seabass on our half day trips. Hogfish are a little picky this past week but were still catching a handful here and there. Red grouper are biting well now, but you have to search for them in the deeper near shore waters still. Seems they are hard to come by in large groups shallower than 100 foot of water. Cobia are still around the area and were seeing some nice ones cruising the surface near shore, don’t forget your pitch rods. They love a tail hooked pinfish on 50lb floro and a 3ot circle.
Offshore- The water is hot offshore right now, still a few wahoo around and some kings here and there but the tuna are becoming harder and harder to find. Grouper action is going well but we are finding them deeper than 150 foot of water. The snapper bite is still going well, but they are a little picky lately especially when the water isn’t moving well. It takes a good soak to get the fish moving out of the ledge and ready to feed. Captain Jack’s dolphin corner
Lots of baby dolphins in the area right now, nearly a half dozen babies! Come join us at Hubbard’s Marina for a fun filled dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour with guaranteed dolphin sightings.
Manatees have also made the occasional visit to our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour boat. It’s awesome time of year to visit our relaxing cruises.
On a recent shell island shelling trip we found a half dozen baby sea turtle hatchlings that were floundering on the beach at shell key. We ended up collecting the hatchlings to bring them to the sea turtle experts at Clearwater marine aquarium for rehabilitation and release.
Sea turtle action around Egmont key is very prolific, were seeing lots of loggerhead sea turtles moving to and from Egmont key and fort de Soto areas. Also, there’s a ton of sea turtle nests along the gulf beaches and our local islands so be sure to be weary while walking the beach.
