Fishing report
Inshore- The sheepshead bite this past week has been crazy! Brian Harris, our new bait expert at Hubbard’s Marina, is also a commercial fisherman and he’s been loading coolers up with nice sheepshead nearly daily using live fiddler crabs and drifting along the jetties of Johns Pass and Blinds pass. The whiting have been thick this past week as well biting on live shrimp weighted to the bottom off the western tip of the north jetty of Johns Pass. Joseph Peralta from Illinois has come in with plenty of nice photos of bigger whiting he’s been landing using this method this past week. We have been hearing the big black drum are still biting well on the large select shrimp or crabs inside the pass. Plus, we saw some big goliath grouper caught from the bridge at night this past week using lady fish for bait. Eddie Trimmings and his buddies have pulled up some decent 100-150lb goliaths from under the south east side of the Johns Pass bridge this past week using monster tackle to wrestle those behemoths out from the rocky structure under the bridge. The trout have been biting well around the pass too especially on the live shrimp free lined or the DOA artificial shrimp worked super slowly over the flats or around the dock lights at night. It’s a great time of year to get out there and enjoy some fun in the sun inside or around Johns Pass.
Near shore- We have been doing well this week when the weather has allowed us to get out there. We had a tough start to the week with some decent front action and high rain chances but even on the rainy Tuesday this past week the fish were ready to chew. The hogfish were a little tougher in the first part of the week but as the weather calmed and the waters cleared the hogfish were hungry again! We have been catching nice hogfish on live shrimp or live fiddler crabs aboard our five hour half days or ten hour all days and especially aboard our private fishing charters at Hubbard’s Marina. The mangrove snapper bite has really been good lately as well especially in the deeper near shore waters closer to 90-100 foot of water. Our largest mangrove snapper are always pulled up on the 3-4inch pinfish or big live white bait like the green backs we now sell at the docks before your trips. To target mangrove snapper near shore, we like around 40lb fluorocarbon and 4-5ot hooks double snelled and a high gear ratio reel or a two speed reel and a light sensitive but strong rod to really feel that bite but have the back bone to wrestle those aggressive snapper off the bottom. Our new custom Bull Bay Hubbard’s Marina rods have a special model specifically designed for this type of mangrove snapper fishing. We are also looking forward to the kingfish and mackerel showing back up near shore, shouldn’t be more than a month before we start to see the first of the spring run!
Offshore – This past weekend’s 39 hour was a little tough on the bottom fishing but we kept grinding and ended up with an acceptable catch. The pelagic action really helped fill in the gaps in the fish box left by the lack of grouper and snapper action like we normally see. We had multiple nice blackfin tuna get caught while trolling between spots and then the real jewel of the trip was a nearly 50lb wahoo caught trolling too. All the fish caught trolling were on the rapala Xrap magnum 30 and 40’s we sell in our shop to guests before leaving. Plus, there was some cobia action while bottom fishing which has been a common occurrence as of late, so it’s always so important to have a pitch rod ready and rigged to toss a bait to a passing cobia. We were able to pick up some mangrove snapper, lane snapper, vermillion snapper, porgies, scamp grouper and red grouper too but it was just a picky bite. Even with the bottom machine lit up the fish just wouldn’t chew this past weekend!

Captain Jack’s dolphin corner
Water is super clear right now in our back bay waters thanks to the super nice and calm weather we have been having and light winds. The water is not stirred up in the slightest and the cooler temps keeps the algae down which allows for some of the clearest water conditions of the year in our ‘spring time’ when water temps are in the mid 60’s to mid 70’s and the weather is nice this time of year it gets crystal clear in the bays and along the passes and on the beaches making it a great time to do a dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour with us or our famous sunset cruise that offers FREE beer and wine!
The dolphins are in very large pods right now hunting the plentiful sheepshead, black drum and mullet so it’s a great time to catch a relaxing cruise and enjoy the playful groups of dolphins and super clear back bay waters around Johns Pass at Hubbard’s Marina. Here’s all the information on our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour – https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/dolphin-watching-cruises/
Along with the playful large groups of dolphins, we have our local bird nesting island called dog leg key which we cruise past during our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour is a beautiful sight this time of year as our local seabird population starts to dawn their mating plumage. As the local seabirds prepare for mating season they get very colorful and decorative plumage or feathers and it makes for a super special viewing experience this time of year aboard our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour!
Our sunset cruise is starting to ramp up in its availability! We normally run our sunset cruise on weekends only in our ‘winter’ season but now as we approach the spring the weather is so nice, the sunsets are so colorful and the people are starting to show up so we are starting to offer the sunset cruise more regularly so call us today to book a relaxing hour and a half sunset cruise with Hubbard’s Marina! It’s a bit more of a party atmosphere compared to our dolphin watching nature cruise and eco tour, and it doesn’t offer the full narration like the dolphin tour but there’s great music and some great jokes. Plus, the sunset cruise takes you down the beautiful gulf beaches at the golden hour with the sunset to your left and the beautiful beaches to your right. Plus, we often spot pods of the dolphins cruising the beaches too while enjoying the free beer and wine offered aboard our sunset cruise at Hubbard’s Marina inside Johns Pass Madeira Beach. To learn more about the fun filled sunset cruise with free beer and wine check out this link – https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/sunset-cruise/

Spring is coming! Snorkeling is about to start back up after a long winter break, and the waters are gorgeous around Egmont key right now! The Tampa bay ferry by Hubbard’s Marina offers 10am and 11am ferry rides to the island daily this time of year. You get three hours on the island after around a 20-30 minute ride out and back to the island. For more info on the Egmont key ferry, visit this page of the Hubbard’s Marina website – https://www.hubbardsmarina.com/egmont-key-ferry-cruise/
