Hubbard’s Marina Fishing Report 7/8/16

Fishing report

Steven Cantrell monster snook

Inshore– The dock fishing has been out of this world lately! The snook are up on top early morning looking for anything and everything to slurp up. They have been taking live baits, dead baits, and artificials and just about anything anglers have been throwing to them.  Jacob Gehlson, from Riverview, came down for a half day and on his first pitch of a DOA shrimp under the dock a monster snook came out and smashed the shrimp on its first twitch. Smokey, our half day first mate, has been tearing the snook up on heavy hand lines using live pigfish for bait any time of day and night. Steven Cantrell, a Pinellas Park local, was using live shrimp and slamming the big dog snook too showing you that any technique and bait will work right now to get the snook chewing. The sharks are also biting well too inside the pass and on the beaches taking any type of large dead bait either suspended by a balloon or held to the bottom.

Allen Miller monster red grouper

Near shore– The red grouper bite is popping near shore! The recent half day and all day near shore charters on the HUB have been catching limits or near limits of big red grouper. They are loving the cut squid wings to mimic octopus tentacles. The mangrove snapper bite has also improved back to the super great aggressive bite we had back in spring. They are slamming the sardine plugs and live shrimp on the light tackle knocker set ups. The mackerel are still thick near shore and the kings around but more spread out and were finding them most often in the deeper near shore waters around 15-20 miles and beyond. Shark fishing is great right now our last private charter for sharks caught over 10 big sharks with 3 over the ten foot mark. Big bull sharks, big lemons and even a few tigers are most commonly caught right now in the near shore waters.

60lb wahoo

Offshore– The mangrove snapper action is super thick right now. The last two thirty nine our overnight fishing trips at Hubbard’s Marina nearly limited out on big mangrove snapper. The big mangroves right now are easily 9-10lbs and the cubera snapper are also coming up! In this past week we have caught two big cubera snapper over 50lbs. The wahoo bite is also hot we caught a 60lb wahoo on the 12 hour and some other nice ones on our thirty nine hour long range party boat trips too! The grouper are biting well too but hard to get off the bottom right now. The reason for this is that the water is clear so you got to use lighter tackle for them to bite, then because the water is so warm and clear they are hanging closer to structure so when they bite your light line close to structure it doesn’t leave you much room to be able to horse them out of the rocks before they are able to pop your leaders.
